This candidate survey is an initiative of the Federation of Ontario Public Libraries, working to elect candidates who support public libraries in the October 6th, 2011 provincial election. Our goals are to communicate the value of public libraries to Ontario’s elected officials, and to mobilize the public to vote for candidates who are committed to building communities with well-funded public libraries.
There are over 300 public and First Nation libraries in Ontario, and their user populations represent an extremely broad demographic of the voting public. In fact, two thirds of Ontario’s population carry public library cards. Libraries are a priority in communities, where they:
- provide services and resources for career planning, job search and upgrading skills
- support small businesses and entrepreneurs with information on market trends and regulatory requirements
- offer vast materials and programs for early literacy development of preschoolers
- help integrate new Canadians into our communities through settlement support and ESL programs
- facilitate access to information on government programs
- maintain local historical and cultural collections.
Our candidate survey is being sent to all incumbent and challenger candidates for provincial office. Your answers will help voters familiarize themselves with your commitment to public libraries. The deadline for completing the survey is October 5, 2011. If you have a platform on public libraries, please send any such platforms or policies to admin@fopl.ca by October 5, 2011. The survey should take approximately 10 minutes to complete. Your responses will be made public on the Federation’s website: www.fopl.ca.
