CFLA-FCAB Appoints Katherine McColgan as Executive Director / La FCAB-CFLA nomme Katherine McColgan
The Canadian Federation of Library Associations/Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèques (CFLA-FCAB) is pleased to announce the appointment of Katherine McColgan as Executive Director commencing August 8, 2017. Ms. McColgan succeeds Kevin Brennan, who has served in an interim role as CFLA-FCAB’s Senior Project Executive since June 2016.
“Katherine is well known to our community as a champion for the library sector. Her extensive experience in government relations, advocacy for the library community, and stakeholder management will be vital to CFLA-FCAB’s continued success in addressing key issues facing Canada’s library community, including Reconciliation and copyright. The CFLA-FCAB board very much looks forward to working with Katherine,” said Peter Bailey, Chair, CFLA-FCAB.
Katherine is a Certified Association Executive and has 18 years of experience working at the national level supporting academic and research libraries, most recently as the Manager, Administration and Programs at the Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL-ABRC). She is the Past President of the Ottawa-Gatineau Chapter of the Canadian Society of Association Executives and has previously served as the interim Executive Director of CARL-ABRC. Katherine will continue to support CARL-ABRC one day a week.
Based in Ottawa and fluently bilingual, Katherine will directly engage with federal government representatives to raise the profile of key issues and ensure that the voice of the Canadian library community is represented in policy decisions. CFLA-FCAB will continue to press the federal government for action on issues including support for Indigenous languages and cultures, digitization of and access to Canadian cultural content, and recognition of libraries as cultural institutions.
CFLA-FCAB extends our thanks and appreciation to Kevin Brennan for his leadership during CFLA-FCAB’s first year and ongoing support during the hiring and transition process. “Kevin ensured that CFLA-FCAB had the foundational operational infrastructure and ensured that we completed our first year with funding to continue our work,” said Mr. Bailey. “In that time, we’ve transitioned vital programs from the former Canadian Library Association, encouraged the federal government to launch new programs found in the 2017 budget, re-established Canadian Library Month in partnership with our member associations, and made major strides in supporting reconciliation with Indigenous peoples through the release of our Truth and Reconciliation Report.”

La Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèques (FCAB) est heureuse d’annoncer la nomination de Katherine McColgan au poste de directrice générale à partir du 8 août 2017. Mme McColgan succède à Kevin Brennan, qui a occupé le poste de façon intérimaire à titre de responsable de projet principal de la FCAB depuis juin 2016.
« Katherine est bien connue dans notre collectivité à titre de championne du secteur des bibliothèques. Sa vaste expérience en relation avec les gouvernements et en sensibilisation dans la collectivité des bibliothèques, ainsi qu’en gestion des intervenants, sera essentielle au succès continu de la FCAB dans la résolution des problèmes clés de la collectivité des bibliothèques du Canada, y compris la réconciliation et le droit d’auteur. Le conseil d’administration de la FCAB est impatient de collaborer avec Katherine, a déclaré Peter Bailey, président du conseil d’administration de la FCAB. »
Katherine est une cadre d’association émérite et compte 18 ans d’expérience à l’échelon national en soutien aux bibliothèques universitaires et de recherche. Plus récemment, elle a occupé le poste de gestionnaire de l’administration et des programmes de l’Association des bibliothèques de recherche du Canada (ABRC). Elle est également l’ancienne présidente de la section Ottawa-Gatineau de la Société canadienne des directeurs d’association et a déjà occupé le poste de directrice générale intérimaire de l’ABRC. Katherine continuera à soutenir l’ABRC un jour par semaine.
Établie à Ottawa et bilingue, Katherine communiquera directement avec des représentants du gouvernement fédéral afin de mieux cerner les problèmes clés et de veiller à ce que la voix de la collectivité des bibliothèques canadiennes soit entendue au moment de prendre des décisions stratégiques. La FCAB continuera à exercer une pression sur le gouvernement fédéral pour qu’il prenne des mesures à l’appui d’enjeux, y compris le soutien envers les langues et les cultures autochtones, la numérisation et l’accès au contenu culturel canadien et la reconnaissance des bibliothèques en tant qu’établissements culturels.
La FCAB remercie Kevin Brennan pour son leadership au cours de la première année de la FCAB et pour son soutien continu pendant le processus d’embauche et de transition. « Kevin a veillé à ce que la FCAB possède l’infrastructure opérationnelle fondamentale et que nous disposions des fonds nécessaires pour continuer notre travail après notre première année, a déclaré M. Bailey. Au cours de cette première année, nous avons muté des programmes vitaux de l’ancienne Association canadienne des bibliothèques, encouragé le gouvernement fédéral à lancer de nouveaux programmes qui se trouvent dans le budget de 2017, rétabli le mois de l’Association canadienne des bibliothèques en partenariats avec nos associations membres et fait des progrès majeurs en soutenant la réconciliation avec les peuples autochtones grâce à la publication de notre rapport sur la vérité et la réconciliation. »
