COVID-19 Update
Government of Canada actions on COVID-19
April 21, 2020
Good Afternoon,
The federal government has made new announcements in response to the COVID-19 crisis. In summary:
  • Canada Revenue Agency has launched a calculator to help employers understand the Canada Emergency Wage Subsidy (CEWS), and how much they are entitled to access under the new program.
  • The Prime Minister confirmed that employers can enroll for the CEWS starting on April 27. Minister Duclos said that they think most claims will be processed by May 5th.  In the meantime, employers are asked to register for CRA’s My Business Account if they do not have one already.
  • The PM also announced $350 million in emergency direct assistance to national community organizations and nonprofits that support vulnerable people. These funds can be used for things like delivering food and medication to seniors, transportation for disabled people, scaling up help lines and helping people access government benefits.
A motion was passed in the House of Commons yesterday which will see in-person sittings with a reduced number of MPs taking place on Wednesdays, and virtual sittings taking place on Tuesdays and Thursdays. While normal sittings are not set to formally resume until May 25th, this reduced schedule will begin next week as a special committee.
