FOPL Member Benefit: Performance Measures for Ontario Public Libraries

Greetings FOPL Members

Attached is a major report developed by FOPL.

Ontario Public Library Operating Data 2001-2013

Overview, Primer on Library Statistics and Collected Tables

At 81 pages it’s a bit daunting to read.  So, here’s the plan to help you and your staff and board digest these data.

1.  You’ll have the big report now – just so that you have good measurement data and longitudinal comparisons and rankings for your planning and strategy use as son as possible.

2. We will be breaking up each chapter into a mailing every Tuesday through Labour Day.  This way you can can have a weekly reading ‘care’ package to read, distribute to staff/stakeholders, and choose whether you want to use these as an item for weekly staff meetings or learning lunches.  Here are the posting titles:

  • Introduction by Stephen Abram, MLS, Executive Director
  • A Primer on Library Data by Robert Molyneux, PhD
  • Key Ratios for Ontario Public Libraries, 2013

  • Sources of data used in these reports

3. We will schedule free FOPL webinars throughout August (giving you some time to read this and be prepared to learn and ask questions).  These webinars will include an overview of the statistics and measurements for Ontario Public Libraries, insights from the data and advice on how to use these data.  We will also have a webinar or two on the 2015 Market Probe Poll of Ontarians and their use and attitudes about Public Libraries.

4. Lastly we will have several sessions at OLA Super Conference on both these comparative data as well as the Market Probe Poll.

It is FOPL’s sincere hope that you find these investments of your membership investments useful.  These are major projects unaffordable in most libraries in Ontario and show the benefit of collaboration through the Federation.
