FOPL Position Statement on UNDRIP
FOPL acknowledges the history of oppression and atrocities the Canadian, provincial and territorial governments have committed against the Indigenous Peoples of what we now call Canada. We also acknowledge the importance of the 2007 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP), as well as the fact that Canada did not move to endorse it until 2016. FOPL recognizes the importance of UNDRIP and its relevance to the work of public libraries. As trusted providers of information, resources, and community programming, libraries help foster learning and understanding about Indigenous histories, cultures, rights, and perspectives.
