UPDATE:  FOPL made a contribution to this important initiative.  The fund has been successful!

We have  received a lovely thank you note from Wendy Newman herself.

Here’s a note from Audrey Johnson, the iSchool’s senior development officer:

“Dear Friends,

I am pleased to report that we have not only reached, but surpassed our goal for the Wendy Newman Library Leadership Award a full two months ahead of schedule!  An incredible $29,510 has been raised by family, friends and colleagues of Wendy Newman since the campaign launched in mid May. When matched by the generous $25,000 gift by Wendy and Jim Newman, the total endowment for the award has reached $54,510.  This goal would not have been achieved without the tremendous support of the public library community.

If you were planning to make a gift to the fund, but haven’t yet done so, donations are still welcome. A larger endowment will enable more alumni to benefit each year from the award.  Thanks again to everyone who participated in the wonderful initiative.

Audrey

P.S.An interesting factoid:  The Faculty of Information is the only U of T Faculty that supports its alumni through grants and awards and the Wendy Newman Library Leadership Award is now the only endowed alumni award in the entire university.

Campaign Background

Wendy Newman, senior fellow and lecturer at the Faculty of Information retired at the end of June.  Wendy made tremendous contributions to the Canadian library community in various leadership roles for over 30 years. In honour of her dedication to public librarianship, a scholarship in her name is being established to support emerging library leaders.  In keeping with her passion, the Wendy Newman Library Leadership Award will help build leadership capacity in the library sector by enabling an alumni of the iSchool to pursue professional development opportunities at some of the best programs in the industry, including the iSchool’s Public Library Leadership Fellows Program, which Wendy helped to form.

The goal was to establish a $50,000 endowed award. Wendy Newman’s family generously agreed to match donations contributed a scholarship fund up to $25,000.  We invite you to contribute to this award in Wendy’s honour. Donations can be made via the U of T website at:   https://donate.utoronto.ca/give/show/13; or contact Audrey for a donation form. Any questions about the award or this campaign, can be directed to:
