PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

Since 2000, First Nation Public Libraries have used one week of the year to raise awareness of their resources, services, programs and activities. First Nations Public Library Week is celebrated the first week of October to coincide with Canadian Library Month.

First Nations Public Library Week is not only an opportunity to promote public library services but also to celebrate cultural uniqueness through creative library programming.

We encourage all Ontario libraries to join in its celebration!

Revitalizing Indigenous Languages

September 29 – October 5, 2019

First Nation Public Library Week will take place from September 29 to October 5, 2019. The theme is Revitalizing Indigenous Languages which complements the 2019 UN International Year of Indigenous Languages.

Invitation to First Nations Public Library Week Launch

The Chippewas of Kettle and Stony Point First Nation are cordially inviting you to the First Nations Public Library Week launch on Monday, September 30, 2019. We are very pleased to host this annual event that shines a spotlight on the First Nation public libraries in Ontario, which contribute in significant ways to vibrant, growing communities. The Kettle and Stony Point Public Library is an important part of our community, and we look forward to showcasing its many roles. We hope you are able to accept this invitation to visit our community for the ceremony officially launching the 2019 First Nations Public Library Week celebrations.

On September 30^th, the ceremony will start at 12:00 p.m. at the Kettle and Stony Point Public Library which is currently located at 9111 West Ipperwash Road, Unit #6. Our community is located on the southeastern shores of Lake Huron approximately 90 kilometers northwest of London. Our website is www.kettlepoint.org where you may find detailed information. We are anticipating attendance from Fist Nations leaders and librarians in Southwestern Ontario, the Ontario Library Association, the Southern Ontario Library Service, and Ontario Library Service – North, and local MPP’s. The media will also be invited to attend and report on this important event promoting First Nation public libraries in Ontario.

About the Artist

Joshua Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley

Joshua Mangeshig Pawis-Steckley is an Ojibway artist from Ontario, whose family is from Wasauksing First Nation. He is a multidisciplinary artist whose work is dedicated to telling the current and historical stories of the Ojibway. Pawis-Steckley paints in the distinct style of Woodland Artists to depict traditional teachings that are rich with cultural and spiritual meaning. He employs the heavy silhouettes and colourful imagery characteristic of Woodland Art to illustrate stories in zines and comics. These works explore the historical relationship between indigenous and non-indigenous peoples in Canada and aim to raise awareness of the current state of affairs today. Pawis-Steckley is a graduate of the Graphic Design program at Nova Scotia Community College. He recently completed artist residencies at Anchor Archive Zine Library, and the Skwachàys Lodge in Vancouver.
