The Canadian Association of Research Libraries (CARL), the Council of Atlantic University Libraries (CAUL) and the Canadian Federation of Library Associations (CFLA) are pleased to present this panel discussion for the Canadian public and academic library community, which will explore the concept of controlled digital lending (CDL) as well as the current context of providing limited access to digitized print collections during the COVID-19 pandemic.

Chris Freeland will discuss how the Internet Archive’s Open Libraries site uses CDL to facilitate access to digitized books. He will also address how the expanded access provided through the National Emergency Library benefited library patrons across Canada lacking physical access to libraries during the pandemic.
Amanda Wakaruk and Christina de Castell will then share their views on the application of CDL within a public and an academic library setting. Amanda and Christina are members of the CFLA Copyright Committee, and are part of a subgroup that is examining the use of CDL in Canada.
