In 2019 FOPL piloted a project with funding from the Ontario Trillium Foundation called Mobile Information for Newcomers (MINE).

The objective of the project was to meet where people congregate and to facilitate access to reliable information services by newcomers who might not be connecting to existing community resources.

This presentation is called “Finding Settlement Information” and it is available online in English and Spanish.  This version has been customized for newcomers in the Kitchener-Waterloo area with examples, resources and practice activities for people living in the region. The presentation has also been customized for Chinese-speaking newcomers in Toronto.  Its modular format allows people to view the full presentation in one go or skip to or repeat topics of interest.

Here are the ways this presentation can be used:

  • directly and independently by newcomers to Canada
  • by employment counselors, settlement workers, library staff, facilitators of conversation circles, etc. to help them help their clients understand the information landscape in this country.
  • by staff who work with newcomers to learn more themselves about the information landscape.

We hope you take some time to review and promote this presentation. Here are a couple of possibilities:

  • linking to the MINE website on your library’s website and/or Facebook page
  • include the link in your social media communications or newsletters, etc.
