Dear CFLA-FCAB Members:

I am writing to you on behalf of the Canadian Federation of Library Associations/Fédération canadienne des associations de bibliothèques. The Board of CFLA-FCAB determined that our highest priority for 2016 was to help libraries respond to the Calls to Action found in the report of the Truth and Reconciliation Commission/Commission de vérité et réconciliation du Canada. Established in 2016, the CFLA-FCAB Truth and Reconciliation Committee/Vérité et reconciliation completed their mandate in early 2017 and delivered a report with 10 overarching recommendations http://cfla-fcab.ca/wp-content/uploads/2017/04/Truth-and-Reconciliation-Committee-Report-and-Recommendations.pdf.

CFLA-FCAB is now implementing the report and recommendations, commencing with Recommendation #1: Establishing a Standing Committee on Indigenous Matters. Please see the attached Committee Charter for more information about this important initiative.

CFLA-FCAB invites volunteers to serve on the CFLA-FCAB Indigenous Matters Committee. The entire Committee will meet 10 times a year. Subcommittees will also meet 10 times a year, on a staggered schedule. Meetings will be via electronic means such as teleconference, or online. Committee members should be willing to dedicate themselves to further the responsibilities of Indigenous Matters Committee, including implementing the recommendations of the Truth & Reconciliation Report.

Members of the Truth & Reconciliation Committee have asked to continue and due to their hard work and diligence, I can unequivocally recommend that they be reappointed. In addition, there are individuals needed in the areas of archives, health, law, records management, school libraries, special libraries, children’s librarianship as well as specialists in cataloguing, classification and teaching faculty in libraries, archives and cultural memory institutions.

We ask your association as a member of CFLA-FCAB and the Canadian library community to recommend possible member(s) for this committee no later than July 24, 2017. The first full Indigenous Matters Committee conference call will take place on July 28, 2017 at 12 pm (EST).

Respectfully,

Camille Callison

Chair, Indigenous Matters Committee

CFLA-FCAB

PS: A number of potential volunteers have reached out to Camille directly. If you are having difficulty in identifying a potential representative, or have any other questions, please contact her at camille.callison@umanitoba.ca.
